The Akai sampler and the Esynth were both set up with the ‘Wheel’ presets loaded, and a MIDI keyboard was attached via a Emagic Unitor 8. The keyboard was then used to (simultaneously) trigger the voices associated with each MIDI note class on each sampler, so that a comparison could be made between the sound of the Akai’s converted presets, and the original presets on the EMU. It quickly became apparent that although the timbral qualities of some of the voices on the Akai were only subtly different to their counterparts on the EMU, some of them were drastically different. A quick browse through the preset settings on the EMU revealed that this was mainly due to differences in filter design between the two samplers, and the availability o processing options on the EMU that are not present on the Akai.
